On octahedral fulleroids

The discovery of the fullerene has raised an interest in the study of other candidates for modeling of carbon molecules. Motivated by works of P. Fowler, Delgado Friedrichs and Deza, Oh(a, b)-fulleroids were defined as cubic convex polyhedra having only a-gonal and bgonal faces and the symmetry group isomorphic with the full symmetry group of regular octahedron. In this paper we give sufficient and necessary condition for existence of Oh(5, n)-fulleroids depending on number n either by finding infinite series of examples to prove existence or proving nonexistence using symmetry invariants.

The synthesis of a variety of PCBM-type [5,6]-fulleroids and their further highly selective photoisomerization to the respective [6,6]-methanofullerenes is presented. Interestingly, the chemical reactivity of [5,6]-fulleroids reveals the same trend (a > b > c > d) to that observed for pristine C70 (α > β > γ > δ).

Conformers of [M(ABC)6] complex have been enumerated on the basis of computational group theory, where M is the central metal, and ABC is the ligand, bound to M through A. Based on the 16 conformers of the M(AB)6 core unit, 7173 conformers have been found for the [M(ABC)6] complex, which are assigned to nine point groups, 1 D3d, 4 D3, 4 S6, 5 C2h, 7 C3, 182 C2, 15 Cs, 23 Ci, and 6932 C1.
